FAIRFIELD — A visit to the Fairfield University campus didn’t end well for two young men early Saturday morning.

Campus security called police about 12:15 a.m. when they spotted two people using a Fairfield University golf cart. The carts are not used at night and, when they are, are only used by staff.

Christian Gebhardt, 21, and Antonio Rey, 19, at first tried to convince security and police they were using the golf cart to pick up drunk college students and bring them to their dorm rooms. Actually, police said, the pair was using the golf car to go back to a friend’s dorm room across campus. Neither is a Fairfield University student.

Gebhardt, from West Islip, N.Y., and Rey, of Syracuse, N.Y., were both charged with second-degree larceny and released on a promise to appear in state Superior Court in Bridgeport Nov. 17. They were also warned to never return to the North Benson Road campus.

The golf cart was valued at $14,000, according to the police report.
