Fairfield Woods team competes at National History Day event
Five students at Fairfield Woods Middle School recently competed in the National History Day event at the University of Maryland.
Ethan Rodier, Peter Cullen, Matthew Holden, Mark Handler and Samir Singh were among the 3,000 middle and high school students at the event held in June at the University of Maryland.
The general theme of this year’s competition, which initially involved 600,000 students from around the nation, was “Leadership and Legacy in History.”
The Fairfield Woods team, after placing in the regional competition, won second place in the state championship, which qualified them for the national event.
The local boys’ project was on the topic, “Igor Sikorsky: Pioneer, Innovator, Aviator,” and they competed against 100 teams in the Junior Group Performance category.
Alice Warren was the Fairfield Woods faculty advisor, and the team received support from the Fairfield Woods PTA, the Sikorsky Archives and Gary Rosato, the Fairfield Woods principal.
