The Fairfield Fire Department has a new lieutenant.

Firefighter Justin Greenhaw was promoted to the rank of lieutenant Thursday in a ceremony before a meeting of the Fire Commission in the Fairfield Public Library.

The seven-year veteran of the town's firefighting force fills an opening left by the retirement of Lieut. Brad Sherman, who had been in the department 33 years.

Greenhaw is the treasurer of the Fairfield Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 1426, and served in the U.S. Air Force before he was hired by the town in early 2004.

He was sworn in by Town Attorney Richard Saxl and acting First Selectman Sherri Steeneck as his wife, two children and parents -- who had flown in from California for the ceremony -- looked on.
