FAIRFIELD — A Samp Mortar Drive man is facing charges after police got a report of a man driving erratically near Lake Mohegan June 28.

David Cross, 28, was charged with operating under the influence and possession of a controlled substance.

Police received a call from a witness around 8:45 p.m. about a man sleeping behind the wheel of a car on Morehouse Highway near Adley Road. As police were on their way to the location, the witness called back to say the man had woken up and was now driving erratically toward Canterbury.

The officer caught up with Cross and said Cross failed to stop for two stop signs and was drifting to the left of the road. After being stopped by police, Cross said he had had two beers at a downtown bar about an hour before. He failed field sobriety tests.

Police also found a small bag with brown powder labeled “WMD.” It was later determined to methamphetamine.

Cross was released after posting a $100 bond. He is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court on July 11.
