The top spellers among Fairfield's fifth-graders will compete in the 30th annual Townwide Spelling Bee on Tuesday evening.

The bee begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Roger Ludlowe Middle School, 689 Unquowa Road. The contest is a preliminary to the statewide spelling bee and, as in previous years, will be hosted by the Junior Women's Club of Fairfield.

Contestants include 43 classroom winners from fifth-grade classes in Fairfield's public and private schools, plus a corresponding number of alternates. Winners will advance to the Connecticut Junior Women Inc. State Spelling Bee on May 15 in Wallingford.

Fairfield's top finishers will be awarded U.S. savings bonds.

The JWC encourages spellers and spectators to bring a new stuffed animal to donate to Brady's Smile, which operates support programs for sick children at Bridgeport Hospital and other area hospitals and their families.

In addition to the spelling bee, the Junior Women's Club hosts a Touch-a-Truck event to fund scholarships for high school women and "A Visit to Santa's House," which supports local charities.
