Every holiday season for the past decade, John Silos and Kate Munson's Ridgedale Road neighbors have tried to persuade them to decorate the towering spruce tree in their yard for Christmas. They've resisted -- that is until Hurricane Sandy toppled the 56-foot-tall evergreen last week.
With the tree far more accessible, the couple hung a few ornaments and provided neighbors a brief bit of pre-holiday cheer before the trunk was cut up.
Some of their mature neighbors, the couple said, watched the tree grow from a modest size when they were children more than 50 years ago.
