FAIRFIELD — Sherman Green is slated to get greener this summer with the opening of a new farmers market weekly at the downtown setting next month.

The market is planned Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning June 19 at the green, corner of Post and Reef roads. It will take place rain or shine.

The market is expected to feature about a dozen local farm vendors and producers, offering a diverse array of fresh and seasonal vegetables, fruit, herbs, bread, eggs and fish. It is planned by the town’s Department of Community and Economic Development, in collaboration with Bill Auer, the owner of the Firehouse Deli on Reef Road. Auer will serve as market master.

“We are delighted to help bring a farmers market to downtown Fairfield,” Mark Barnhart, the town’s economic development director, said in a statement announcing the farmers market. “Bill Auer was really the driving force behind this, and his persistence finally paid off. Bill’s enthusiasm is contagious, and I couldn’t ask for a better partner.”

“The response from area farmers and producers has been really terrific,” Auer said in the statement, adding that a website for the market is in the works.
