Field of Flags tribute coming to Greenfield Hill
Updated 10:30 am, Wednesday, June 3, 2015
The display, open to the public at no cost, features more than 7,000 flags representing American military personnel who have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Since the last exhibit at the church in June 2013, 129 more Americans have died. There is a flag dedicated to each soldier.
Organizers said the community is welcome to help plant the flags June 20 from 9 a.m. until noon, or to help take down the display July 11. Volunteers will be on hand to assist in the process.
A list of casualties by name will be displayed on a board by the field, showing the name and rank, and a notebook will be kept in the church building with the name, rank, state and date of death of each casualty.
The idea of the field originated with Somers Congregational Church in the upstate town of Somers, and has traveled to 12 states and 65 churches. This is the fourth time Greenfield Hill has hosted the exhibit.
