FAIRFIELD — A driver who was trapped in a rollover crash in town Tuesday morning was taken to the hospital with severe injuries, according to fire officials.

First responders were dispatched around 6:25 a.m. to the area in front of Fairfield Warde High School. Officials said the first arriving unit found a vehicle on its side with a patient unconscious inside.

Firefighters used equipment to remove the roof to get to the driver.

Police Lt. Edward Weihe said the driver appeared to have blacked out from a medical condition. He said the extrication process, during which the driver regained consciousness, took about 20 minutes.

Medics on scene treated the driver, then transported the person to the hospital to be treated for severe injuries.
