The town is taking the first steps toward extending a sidewalk along Unquowa Road to the Ludlowe High and Middle School complex.

Work crews were clearing brush Monday as the "Safe Routes to School" sidewalk project got under way.

Juliana Harris, a computer-assisted design specialist in the Department of Public Works, said the brush clearing will prepare a strip for extending a sidewalk to the schools.

Bill Hurley, the town engineer, oversees the local Safe Routes to School projects, but was not available Monday to provide additional details.
