Flu vaccine appointments available Friday
Call Friday, Nov. 6, for an appointment at the town's second clinic offering free H1N1 flu vaccinations, the Fairfield Health Department headed by Sands Cleary announced Monday.
The call-in time for appointment screening is between 2 and 5 p.m. The number is 256-3082.
More vaccine is expected within days for the clinic, which is anticipated to be held next week. As of press time Tuesday, the exact day had not been announced.
When a resident calls in to make an appointment, a health department associate will ask various questions to see if the person hoping to be vaccinated meets eligibility requirements mandated for all local heath departments in recent days by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health.
"You must be in one of the following groups to be eligible to receive the H1N1 vaccination," it was stated in the state health department mandate:
"¢ Pregnant women may receive the injectable form of the vaccine only.
"¢ 6 months to 4 years with "No high risk medical conditions" may receive either the nasal spray or injection.
"¢ 5 years to 18 years with "No high risk medical conditions" may receive the nasal spray only.
"¢ 2 years to 18 with "high risk medical conditions" may receive the injection only.
Regulations for anyone not listed above and who lives with or cares for an infant under 6 months:
"¢ If you have underlying medical conditions, you may receive the injection only.
"¢ If you are age 50 or over, you may receive the injection only.
"¢ If you have no high risk medical conditions and are under 50, you may receive the nasal spray or injection.
As supplies improve, it is expected that eligibility will expand to the point that everyone who wants it will be offered H1N1 vaccine.
When calling to undergo pre-screening for an appointment, Fairfield Health Department aides, who will be manning the phone lines, advised: "There will be multiple lines. They will be busy. So keep trying again and again until you get through. Patience will be called for."
