Four seniors at high schools in Fairfield were among 33 students honored for excellence in science and math during a program June 18 at Fairfield University.

The university's School of Engineering cited a total of 33 students from Fairfield and New Haven counties during its 17th annual Excellence in Mathematics and Science Awards.

Among them were Kara Westhoven of Fairfield Ludlowe High School, Kyle Scheetz of Fairfield Warde High School, Andrew Ostrosky of Fairfield College Preparatory School and Gwendolyn Vitale of Notre Dame Catholic High School.

Students were nominated by their respective principals and teachers. The School of Engineering said the awards program's goal is to inspired students to become mechanical engineers, medical researchers and physicists.
