U.S. District Judge Janet Hall sentenced North Kingstown, R.I., resident John O’Brien to three years in jail after he admitted to defrauding four clients of more than $950,000 as an attorney in Fairfield, including the owners of a New Canaan lawn equipment business.

According to the office of U.S. Attorney Deirdre Daly, while running CT Trust Counsel between 2011 and 2014, O’Brien used funds to pay off debts owed others, while also diverting some of the money to pay for personal expenses, including payments to his ex-wife and private school tuition.
