BRIDGEPORT — Unwanted guns can be turned in anonymously for gift cards Saturday during the police department’s gun buyback event.

The department partnered with the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport and Swords to Plowshares Northeast to host the buyback, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the community services building at 1395 Sylvan Ave.

Those turning in rifles or shotguns can receive up to a $50 gift card, $200 for a handgun or revolver and $250 for an assault rifle. Police said the guns must be working and unloaded, as well as secured in a bag or container.

The buyback is intended to take unwanted guns out of homes and off the streets. Police said free gun locks will also be available at the event.

June marks National Gun Violence Awareness month.

There is no appointment necessary. Participants do not need to provide identification; there are no questions asked.

Those who participate in the buyback should put the weapon in the trunk and notify an officer on site who will remove the gun or guns from the vehicle.

Children are not permitted to attend the event.
