FAIRFIELD — Ashley Noonan took a look in the mirror, checking out the red and black jacket she had tried on for size at the new Goodwill Store, 500 Kings Highway East.

“I like to support recycling efforts,” the local resident said, adding that she thinks Goodwill’s newest retail location is great.

“It’s vast and very well organized,” Noonan said. “It’s almost overwhelming.”

The store, which opened its doors in September, celebrated a grand opening Friday, complete with giveaways and a ribbon cutting.

Another local resident, Ashlin Brennan, said she’s worked as a retail associate at the store since it opened.

“I’m always on the floor, either as a cashier or making sure everything’s arranged right,” she said. “I enjoy it.”

Brennan said she likes working in the store’s environment, where there are a lot of regular customers that you get to know.

“I also support their mission to give back to the community,” Brennan said.

The new location features a drive-thru donation process and employs about 30 people from across the community. Last year, sales from Goodwill stores in western and northern Connecticut helped to fund employment training, job placement services, and support services for more than 25,000 people.

“It provides employment opportunities, it provides training opportunities, and it also provides a connection to the community,” Vickie Volpano, president and CEO of Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut, said at Friday’s ribbon cutting. “The shoppers and donors support our mission.”

First Selectman Mike Tetreau, on hand with the ceremonial large scissors, said he’s thrilled to have the Goodwill store in town.

“Our economy needs jobs, jobs, and job training,” Tetreau said, while Beverly Balaz, director of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, said she is “delighted” to have the store, and the drive-up drop-off area..
