State Sen. John McKinney, of Fairfield, has been cited by the Healthy Schools Network for his work to make schools environmentally healthier.

The 26th District Republican was presented the organization's National Healthy Schools Hero Award during a ceremony at the state Capitol April 30.

Thre group said McKinney was one of the strongest champions of the school indoor-air-quality law in 2003 and the green-cleaning for schools law in 2009.

"He has consistently supported school environmental health laws addressing pesticide use, bus idling and high performance standards for design, construction and renovation of schools," the organization said in a news release.
