A public hearing on a request to boost Fairfield residential water rates 18.3 percent next year will take place Tuesday at Sullivan-Independence Hall.

The rate increase bid by Aquarion Water Co. will be open for public comment starting at 6:30 p.m. at the hearing convened in the first-floor conference room by the state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority.

In addition to the increase in residential rates, the water company is asking permission to hike fees 18.4 percent for public authority use and 9 percent for fire departments.

In a statement Monday, First Selectman Michael Tetreau said the town plans to make a statement at the hearing in opposition to the proposed increases.
