The air was almost tropical Friday morning as the Summer Sidewalk Sales were rolled out by Fairfield merchants, offering hot bargains for shoppers with the endurance to sweat out the annual event organized by the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce.

Some shoppers were aware the sales days were coming up Friday and Saturday, but others were pleasantly surprised.

"We were at Chef's Table for breakfast and saw the balloons at Prudential Realty, which drew us over. We plan to walk the shops," said Fairfielder Nanette Goby.

Carra Dmowski, at Cargo Bay, was trying to stay cool under a white tent the store had set up on the sidewalk.

In front of Fairfield University Bookstore, Fairfielder Bruce Meier and his sons were browsing books placed on rack out front.

Colorful dresses and jewelry adorned the downtown sidewalks in front of Post Road shops like Apricot Lane Boutique, Capri women's clothing, Eliza B's, the Tennis Spot, Giuliana's Boutique and Snappy Gator.
