A public update on the continuing cleanup of lead-contaminated sediment from the Mill River is planned Dec. 7.

The forum will start at 7 p.m. in Board of Education offices, 501 Kings Highway East. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions.

Representatives from the Exide Group, the owners of the property on the Post Road where the cleanup is taking place, and TRC Engineering, the firm conducting the cleanup work on behalf of the Exide Group, will report on work that was completed in 2015 and will give a preview of what is planned in 2016.

Others scheduled to attend are First Selectman Michael Tetreau, representatives from the town’s Harbor Commission, Shellfish Commission, Conservation Commission and Department of Public Works, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and members of the neighborhood group FairPLAN.

“Once the cleanup of the Mill River is complete, this entire brownfield area, when developed, will not only serve as a welcome addition to our tax base,” Tetreau said in a statement announcing the forum, “but will also make this site an extended part of our beautiful and vibrant downtown, unifying and enhancing this end of the Post Road and making it a more appealing gateway to and from Southport.”
