A Southgate Lane resident told police she was bitten by a Great Dane while walking on Pequot Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Friday and police are asking for help in finding the dog and its owner.

She said she was walking near Southport Beach when a thin, black man walking a fawn-colored Great Dane on a leash passed by her. She said the dog lunged toward her but she did not realize she had been bitten until she got home. She said she did not recognize the man or the dog.

The woman has begun receiving post-exposure rabies shots as a precaution, but finding the owner could eliminate further need for shots, police said.

The man and the dog continued walking toward Sasco Creek Road in Westport, and the area was later searched by animal control officers and Westport police.

If anyone has information on the owner of the Great Dane they are asked ot call Fairfield Animal Control at 203-254-4857.
