JOSEPH BERESKI

Joseph Bereski, 88, of Fairfield, husband of the late Victoria Hrostek Bereski, died March 15, 2010, with his family by his side.

Born in Bridgeport, son to the late Nicholas and Susan Marinko Beresky, he was a Fairfield Town resident for most of his life. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy who served aboard the USS Diachenko. While in the service, he was an avid boxer.

Bereski worked for the Southern Connecticut Gas Co. for more than 30 years, until his retirement. A graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School, class of 1939, in his youth he enjoyed playing football with the Fairfield Townies and baseball with various Bridgeport leagues, with which he was an outstanding batter. He was a longtime bowler for numerous leagues at the Nutmeg, Circle and Milford lanes, and was a big Boston Red Sox fan. He belonged to the Fairfield VFW and American Legion, the Bridgeport and Fairfield YMCA and attended the Grasmere Seniors. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Bereski was a very content man who loved his children and always put them first. He looked forward to all the family gatherings (and there were many ). He enjoyed watching his grandchildren growing up and attending all their activities. He touched many hearts and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his children, Joseph Bereski Jr. of Milford, Roseann Sheping and her husband, Daniel of Fairfield, Kenneth Bereski and his wife, Debra of Orange, Gregory Bereski and his wife, Patricia of Middletown, and Victoria Bereski of Fairfield, his caregiver. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joey, Melissa, Ken, Ashley, Derek, Lauren, Greg, Craig and Jenna; and his great-grandson, Ryan; as well as his sister, Sue Drzal; a brother, Johnny; and many nieces, nephews and his best friend, "Charlie" (his dog ).

Bereski was predeceased by his brothers, Nicholas and Elmer, and a sister, Alice Kertesz.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 18, at 11:15 a.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, Fairfield, and at noon at Holy Cross Church on Tahmore Drive, Fairfield. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Mt. Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 17, from 4 to 8 p.m.
