Joseph Varjas of Fairfield, husband of Dorothy Chetstowski Varjas, died on his 91st birthday, March 20, 2010, in his home.
Born in Fairfield, he was a lifelong town resident. A veteran of World War II, Varjas served his country in the U.S. Army. Upon leaving the service, he went to work for the Bridgeport Metal Goods Co. and, after more than 40 years, retired to become a Fairfield special police officer, from which he retired after 25 years of service at the age of 90.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Dorothy, he is survived by his children, David, Wayne, Caren and Neal; his grandchildren, Brett, Ryan, Chris and Emily; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, sisters and his grandson, Corey Varjas.
Funeral services will take place today, March 24, at 10 a.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, Fairfield; burial will be private. Calling hours took place Tuesday.
