The Fairfield Arts Center will host Beachside Jazz with bassist and composer Brian Q. Torff on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Penfield Pavilion on Penfield Beach. The performance starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $40.

In addition to leading his own trio, Torff is the musical director for the Django Reinhardt New York Festival and Fairfield University's music program director. He began his professional career in 1974 when bassist Milt Hinton offered him a touring opportunity with Cleo Laine.

He has recorded and performed with many musicians, including Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland and jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. He and George Shearling played at the White House for President Reagan in 1982.

Torff has performed at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and other venues.
