John R. O'Connor
Born in 1928 in Providence, R.I., he was the youngest of three children of Charles and Agnes O'Connor. The family moved to Fairfield in 1938. He graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School in 1946 and enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served in U.S.-occupied Japan. On returning home, he attended Fairfield University.
O'Connor worked for more than 40 years in the insurance industry. He began his career with the Hartford Insurance Co. and later was a partner for more than 30 years at Beardsley, Brown and Bassett.
He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Walsh, and over the next 18 years they became the parents of three sons and five daughters. They were parishioners at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, where the children attended grammar school and O'Connor was a member of the Men's Guild. He was also a supporter of his alma mater, Fairfield U., and a long-time member and past president of the Fairfield Rotary Club. He served for years on the campaign committee of the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County and was awarded its distinguished Norman Leeds Award for volunteerism. He helped organize the Greater Bridgeport Junior Hockey Association and was inducted into its Hall of Fame. He also was a former member of the Patterson Club.
His first wife, Barbara, died in 1988.
He is survived by his wife, Hope Forsman O'Connor of Florida; eight children, David (Daria) O'Connor of Brookline, Mass.; Susan (Paul) Poniatowski of Haddon Heights, N.J.; Jill (Rob) Mainiero of Andover, Mass.; Janet O'Connor Cornell of Westfield, N.J.; Robert (Linda) O'Connor of Fairfield; Anne (Hugh) McCrory of Fairfield; Brian (Maura) O'Connor of Fairfield, and Mary Kate (Jason) Gobleck of Ridgefield; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles (Jean) O'Connor; several brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Mitchell.
Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull.
