Leslie (Whitey) Caldwell, 78, of Fairfield, husband of 57 years of Angelina Caldwell, died March 22, 2010, with his family by his side.

Born in Port Chester, N.Y., the son of the late Leslie and Rose Gertrude Caldwell, he had been a Fairfield resident for the last five years, and prior to that, a 29-year resident of Harrison, N.Y.

Caldwell served in the U.S. Army. A butcher and caterer by trade, he had a true love for preparing and serving food. He was devoted to the Port Chester Fire Department located on Westchester Avenue, where he prepared their inspection dinner for many years. He also enjoyed preparing dinners for several local organizations and churches in the Port Chester and Fairfield areas.

He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend who delighted in helping others.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Angelina, include two children, Leslie (Sammy) Caldwell and his wife, Susan of Mamaroneck, N.Y., and Joann Marino and her husband, Michael of Fairfield; five grandchildren, Michael and Brian Caldwell, David, Daniel and Nicole Marino; a great-grandson, Anthony Caldwell; a sister, Violet Civitella of Broomall, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters and a brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 26, at Holy Family Church, 700 Old Stratfield Road, Fairfield. Entombment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Calling hours took place Thursday in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
