The swimming area at Lake Mohegan has reopened today after being closed for a day in the wake of heavy rain.

Town officials had closed the fresh-water beach Wednesday as a precaution when runoff from heavy overnight rainfall posed a public health threat. Circulation at Lake Mohegan is limited, so swimming is routinely prohibited while the potential for bacterial buildup from runoff is high.

The town's other beaches on Long Island Sound are open today as they were on Wednesday, according to the Health Department.
