Letter: Check backgrounds before selling guns
On Friday, June 14, I watched televised ceremonies marking the six-month anniversary of the Newtown gun murders of 20 first-graders and their six defenders. Speakers read the names of 6,000 Americans killed with guns since Dec. 14, 2012. The victims were of varying ages. Supporters of absolute gun rights say it is not guns which kill people, it is people who kill people.
Precisely! It's because people kill people that we need a system of strong background checks. Sounds logical to me. I can't imagine law-abiding gun owners would seriously complain about any transitory inconvenience such a system would cause them. The 20 children and those who tried to shield them lost their lives. An inconvenience simply does not stand up against this dreadful reality, never to be reversed.
