I read the letter by Tom McCarthy, Republican majority leader of the Representative Town Meeting, with puzzlement. Mr. McCarthy, who has proposed and supported cuts to the education budget for multiple years, seeks to imply that elected Republicans are champions of education in this town. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In addition to Mr. McCarthy, other Republican leaders, including Michael Herley, Pam Iocono, Ed Bateson and Ray Neuberger, have supported education cuts. Former RTM members Laurie McArdle and Chris Tymniak also spoke in favor of and supported education budget cuts and, more recently, as members of the Board of Selectmen, proposed and voted to significantly reduce education funding for our town. I see great irony in this two-faced approach.

Do these Republican leaders believe that they can point fingers at others without having their own (dismal) record in education exposed? It's time they began working on behalf of all Fairfielders, not just their own, narrow, interests.
