Live updates: Power mostly restored across CT after nor’easter

After a nor’easter hit Connecticut and the region on Tuesday, road closures and power outages remained across the state on Wednesday.

Heavy rain fell throughout Tuesday as a slow-moving coastal storm moved through the area, bringing localized flash flooding and strong winds. Gusty winds are forecast to continue through Wednesday afternoon.

Eversource, the state’s largest utility company, said it was prepared for up to 125,000 outages.

Below are the latest weather-related updates across the state.


10 p.m. — Outages

Fewer than 700 Connecticut customers are without power. Eversource is reporting 644 outages and United Illuminating is reporting seven outages.

6 p.m. — Outages

Connecticut still has 2,213 customers without power after a nor’easter hit the state Tuesday. Most of these outages, about 2,027, are being reported by Eversource. Some of the most affected areas are Meriden with 256 outages, Stafford with 211 and Somers with 169.

United Illuminating is reporting 186 outages, 168 of which are in Derby.

3:30 p.m. — Outages

Eversource reports 5,612 customers without power, including 1,065 in East Lyme, 783 in Meriden and 740 in East Lyme. United Illuminating reports 357 outages, most of which are in Shelton and Derby.

1:05 p.m. — Outages

Eversource reports 10,363 customers without power. United Illuminating reports 311 outages.

11:40 a.m. — Outages

Eversource reports 10,586 outages. United Illuminating reports 1,763 customers without power.

11:08 a.m. — Seymour — cleared by 4:10 p.m.

Route 313 is closed at Old Ansonia Road because of a tree down on wires.

10:20 a.m. — Montville — cleared by 2:25 p.m.

Route 85 is closed in both directions at Lakewood Drive because of a tree down into poles and wires.

8:30 a.m. — Washington — cleared by 9:45 a.m.

Route 202 is closed at Route 47 because of low hanging wires.

8:30 a.m. — Outages

Eversource is reporting 14,935 customers without power.

United Illuminating is reporting 1,106 outages.

8:14 a.m. — North Stonington — cleared by 2:20 p.m.

Route 201 is closed at Northwest Corner Road because of a tree down on wires.

7:50 a.m. — Mansfield — cleared by 1:40 p.m.

Route 44 is closed between Baxter and Birch roads because of a tree and wires down.

7:45 a.m. — Outages

Eversource is now reporting 13,699 customers without power, including 2,230 in Meriden, 1,031 in Mansfield and 1,689 in Tolland.

There are 370 reported United Illuminating outages, including 142 in Shelton and 150 in Woodbridge.

7:40 a.m. — Ashford — cleared by 8:15 a.m.

Route 74 is closed at Zaicek Road because of a large tree in the roadway.

7:10 a.m. — Outages

Eversource said strong winds will continue to hit the state and take down trees and limbs.

“If you’re driving, please be careful of debris in the road that could be tangled with power lines,” Eversource said in a tweet Wednesday morning. “Crews are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.”

Eversource is reporting 11,584 outages. United Illuminating’s outage total has dropped to 350.

7 a.m. — Brookfield

A flood warning continues for the Still River that flows through Brookfield and Danbury, the National Weather Service said. Minor flooding is occurring in areas around the river. The river is forecast to fall below flood stage late Wednesday.

6:55 a.m. — Outages

Eversource reports 6,053 customers without power.

United Illuminating reports 3,852 outages.

6:49 a.m. — Franklin — cleared by 8:15 a.m.

Route 87 is closed at Murphy Road for a tree down on wires.

6 a.m. — Woodbridge — cleared by 12:30 p.m.

Route 243 is closed in both directions between Milhaven Road and Tumblebrook Road because of trees and wires in the roadway.

4 a.m. — Ferry cancellations

The Rocky Hill Ferry and the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry are closed until further notice because of high waters.


9:30 p.m. — Outages

United Illuminating is reporting 780 outages as of 9:36 p.m. Some 568 of those were reported in Woodbridge and 137 outages were reported in Shelton.

Eversource is reporting 674 outages as of 9:37 p.m., including 194 in Farmington, 81 in Sterling and 80 in Haddam.

8:30 p.m. — Outages

Eversource has restored power to more than 350 customers, but 449 customers are still experiencing outages, as of 8:13 p.m. There are 91 outages in Stamford, 81 outages in Sterling and 80 in Haddam.

UI is reporting 268 outages as of 8:33 p.m. A majority of these, about 215, are reported in Shelton.

7 p.m. — Outages

Eversource is reporting 807 outages, about 200 fewer than an hour ago. The most outages are in Newtown with 232, Burlington with 113 and Haddam with 69.

UI restored power to more than 1,700 customers in the past hour, leaving 292 customers still in the dark. Most of those outages, about 206, are in Shelton.

6:30 p.m. — Wilton

The town has reopened Buckingham Ridge Road near Friendly Land and Westport Road between Chestnut Hill Road and Dudley Road.

Old Boston Road is partially blocked near Seir Hill Road, the town of Wilton reported.

6 p.m. — Outages

United Illuminating is reporting 2,006 outages as of 5:44 p.m. A majority of those outages — 1,635 — are in Bridgeport. There are also 146 outages in Shelton and 67 in Trumbull.

Eversource is reporting 1,009 outages as of 5:57 p.m., including 247 in Newtown, 156 in Monroe and 94 in Westbrook.

5:30 p.m. — Weather warnings

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for southern New London County. The warning will go until 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The nor’easter could bring damaging winds that could blow down trees and power outages. widespread power outages are expected, the weather service added.

The weather service warned that people should remain in the lower levels of their homes during the windstorm and avoid windows if possible.

A flash flood warning is also in effect for Fairfield County until 10 p.m.

Up to 5 inches of rain have fallen across the region since last night, and the weather service is predicting up to 2 inches more before the storm ends.

The flood advisory for Litchfield County has extended until 6 p.m.

5 p.m. — Westport

Several roads in Westport are closed due to flooding, according to Westport Police Lt. David Wolf. The roadways include Greens Farms at Center Street, Cross Highway between Roseville Road and Hockanum Road, Myrtle Avenue at Post Road East, Greens Farm Road at the Fairfield town line and Tiffany Lane.

Wolf said the department expects more road closures as the rain and wind pick up throughout the night. Officials are also asking people to stay off the roads.

3:47 p.m. — Eversource response

Eversource is still prepared for the storm to be a level 5 event, meaning outages could rise up to 125,000, according to a company spokesman. Outages reported by the electrical utility have stayed below 2,500 throughout the day, but high winds and more rain are expected overnight, which could produce more power outages.

3 p.m. — Outages

Eversource is reporting 1,422 outages, or about 500 fewer than the previous hour. There are 236 outages in Guilford, 208 in Monroe and less than 100 outages in the company’s other service areas in the state.

United Illuminating is reporting 184 outages, or about 700 fewer than the previous hour. The most outages were recorded in Trumbull at 61 and West Haven at 44.

2:20 p.m. — Harwinton

Catlin Road is closed from Timber Lane to Silver Lane Passway due to a downed tree and wires, the Harwinton Volunteer Fire Department said. The downed trees and wires have caused power outages in the area. Eversource has been notified. As of 2:56 p.m., Eversource reported 42 outages in Harwinton.

2 p.m. — Stamford

A portion of Erskine Road is closed because of a tree and wires down, police said.

1:55 p.m. — Outages

Eversource is reporting 1,945 outages, including 185 in Guilford, 185 in Haddam, 182 in Newtown, 120 in Stamford, 111 in Weston and 217 in Wilton.

United Illuminating is reporting 890 outages, including 200 in Bridgeport, 442 in New Haven and 98 in Shelton.

1:40 p.m. — Danbury

The city opened the northbound lane of Main Street around 1:25 pm. after flooding closed the road at Elmwood Place on Monday night, Mayor Joe Cavo said on Tuesday. The southbound side remains closed.

1:25 p.m. — Outages

Eversource is reporting 2,201 customers without power, including 388 in Guilford, 180 in Haddam, 181 in Newtown, 149 in Stamford, 102 in Washington, 111 in Weston and 217 in Wilton.

United Illuminating is reporting 2,907 customers without power, including 2,241 in New Haven.

12:42 p.m. — Eversource

12:37 p.m. — Weston

Town police report Kellogg Hill Road is closed near Wells Hill Road for a tree and wires down blocking the road. White Birch Road is also closed near Hickory Lane due to a tree and wires down.

12 p.m. — Outages

Eversource is reporting 1,906 outages, including 333 in Guilford, 189 in Norfolk and 264 in Wilton.

United Illuminating is reporting 3,501 outages, including 222 in Bridgeport, 1,072 in Fairfield and 1,935 in New Haven.

11:53 a.m. — Wilton

Police say Buckingham Ridge Road is closed near Friendly Lane. Westport Road remains closed between Chestnut Hill and Dudley roads. Old Boston Road is partially blocked in the area of Seir Hill Road.

11:51 a.m. — Norwalk

Knowalot Lane is closed due to a tree down on wires. A portion of Taylor Avenue is closed because of low hanging wires. Stevens Street is closed between Stuart Avenue and Rhodonolia Drive because of a power line down.

11:50 a.m. — Greenwich

Emergency crews are working to clear downed trees in the area of North Street and Taconic Road, as well as Zaccheus Mead Lane.

11:40 a.m. — Stratford

Officials in Stratford say Surf Avenue is seeing some flooding. There are also wires down on Nicholas Avenue. Huntington Road is closed because of a tree down that public works is working to clear.

11:35 a.m. — Westport

Police say Post Road West is closed to all traffic between Wright and Cross streets.

11:30 a.m. — Hartford

Fire officials said the Department of Public Works will check and clear catch basins throughout the city. Residents who might have put loose leaves on the streets are asked to pull them back to the curb to prevent any additional clogging of the catch basins.

11:15 a.m. — Wilton

Westport Road — Route 33 — is closed at Downe Lane, police said.

11:10 a.m. — Outages

Eversource is reporting 1,786 customers without power, including 329 in Guilford, 85 in New London, 91 in New Milford, 189 in Norfolk, 93 in Westport and 253 in Wilton.

United Illuminating is reporting 824, including 618 in Fairfield and 152 in Bridgeport.

11 a.m. — New Haven

New Haven officials said winds are expected to increase this afternoon and remain gusty for several hours before subsiding later this afternoon. The Department of Public Works has tree crews on standby as needed and personnel ready to help with drainage or flooding issues, officials said.

10:38 a.m. — Norwalk

Norwalk Public Schools have canceled after school programs and activities, school officials announced on Twitter.

City officials also closed Calf Pasture Beach and Cranbury Park Tuesday due to the weather, with no timeline for their reopening given.

10:32 a.m. — Outages

Eversource now reports 2,701 customers without power, including 1,398 in the town of Madison alone.

UI reports 130 outages in total, including 93 in Fairfield

10:28 a.m. — State warns residents of flooding

9:25 a.m. — Outages

Eversource outages are climbing throughout the morning, with the utility company now reporting 706 customers without power.

UI continues to report just the one outage in Woodbridge.

8:45 a.m. — Harwinton — cleared by 11 a.m.

Route 222 is closed at Hayden Road because of a tree and wires down in the area. Reported by the state DOT at 8:30 a.m.

8 a.m. — Outages

Of the 122 outages reported by Eversource, there are 40 in Montville, 17 in Plymouth, 30 in Putnam and 13 in Ridgefield. The raining outages are scattered throughout the state.

All of UI’s 13 outages are in Shelton.

7:30 a.m. — Greenwich

Police urged residents to avoid large areas of puddling or standing water if they need to take to the roads on Tuesday. The department said drivers should take additional time to get to their destination, adding that rain, leaves and water on the roads will impact braking. The town’s tree division, public works, EMS, fire and police units are “ready to respond” to calls for service, police said.

7 a.m. — Norwalk

Police reported flooding on East Avenue between Fort Point and Winfield streets and urged drivers through the area to seek alternate routes.

5 a.m. — Danbury — northbound lanes reopened at 1:25 p.m.

Route 53 has been closed at Elmwood Place because of water on the road since about 11 p.m. Monday, according to the state Department of Transportation.
