Local man charged for 2015 liquor store thefts
FAIRFIELD — A suspect in several liquor store thefts was arrested on a warrant early Sunday morning after the 22-year-old Fairfield resident and two friends were spotted inside a house under construction on Mayweed Road.
Timothy Dutter, who lives on Cider Mill Lane, was also issued an infraction for simple trespass, along with his two friends, Colin O’Brien, 22, of Sherwood Drive, and Evan MacGuffie, 21, of Mayweed Road.
Police were investigating thefts at liquor stores in 2015, when an officer spotted Dutter on Bronson Road and recognized him from surveillance video from Al’s Warehouse showing a theft from about 30 minutes prior. The officer stopped Dutter, who was riding his bike, and asked to look into his backpack. In the backpack was the bottle of Southern Comfort stolen from Al’s.
He was charged at the time with sixth-degree larceny and allegedly admitted to stealing a bottle of whiskey from Fairfield Wines and Spirits on the Post Road, and Captain Morgan rum and Dewar’s whiskey from That’s the Spirit Shop on Fairfield Beach Road on two separate occasions. According to the police report, Dutter said he stole the alcohol for his personal use and for the thrill. He said the “thrill of doing it outweighed the risk of getting caught.”
Police applied for warrants for the earlier thefts, and those warrants were served when Dutter was found in the empty house. The three said they were just there checking out the new homes under construction.
Dutter was charged with three counts of sixth-degree larceny and released on a promise to appear in state Superior Court in Bridgeport Dec. 27.
