FAIRFIELD — A holiday treat came early for the Dignon children when, unaware they were even part of a raffle, the family won the toy that has inspired overnight camp-outs at toy store chains and a soaring online price tag.

A speckled egg that hatches into one of five “species” of fuzzy interactive stuffed animals, the Hatchimal has created a recent craze after stock quickly flew off store shelves. The Dignon kids — Ewan, 11, Addy, 9, and McKenna, 6 — happily took home the very last Hatchimal at Fairfield toy store HobbyTown USA Wednesday evening.

“Hatchimal is the hottest toy this Christmas,” store Owner Marc Rosenblum said. “It sort of took off by itself.”

HobbyTown had gotten some of the hot item in stock but quickly sold out and had to turn many hopefuls away. The store sold its Hatchimals for $150 because it paid more to stock the product, according to Rosenblum.

The suggested retail price is $59.99, though online sellers have catapulted prices over $200.

After nearly selling out of the toy, the store chose to raffle off its final Hatchimal, automatically entering any customer in its system that spent at least $100 during the first full week of December. Rosenblum called it a thank you to customers.

Mother Gina Dignon said the family was surprised to find out they won and, at first, did not realize they were being awarded this year’s hot holiday gift.

“We had to look up what it was,” she said.

After Googling, the kids were excited and eager to take the sought-after toy home.
