FAIRFIELD — An alert officer spotted a suspect in the June 2017 theft of a five-ton air conditioning unit while on patrol Friday morning.

On Dec. 29, Officer Kevin Wells recognized the truck being driven by Lee McKelvie, 58, on the Post Road and pulled him over.

McKelvie and a second man had been spotted on surveillance video taking the air conditioning unit from behind Steffano’s Restaurant on Tunxis Hill last summer. Police were able to track the pickup truck to McKelvie, who allegedly admitted taking the unit, claiming it was just scrap. McKelvie lives on Denver Avenue in Bridgeport.

Police applied for a warrant, and when Wells spotted McKelvie, he served him with the warrant for his arrest for fourth-degree larceny. He was released on a promise to appear in state Superior Court in Bridgeport Jan. 18.
