Anthony Costello, 52, of Taft Avenue, Bridgeport, was charged with third-degree burglary Friday after he was seen running from Congregation Ahavath Achim, 1571 Stratfield Road, police said.
Police received a call from the synagogue's vice president reporting that the house of worship was closed, but he had spotted a man a man running from the back door. The synagogue official followed Costello as he ran down Lilyan Drive and then into a back yard on Churchill Road, where he was picked up by police.
Costello told officers he entered through an unlocked side door, and he apparently drank alcohol and ate food while inside.
The synagogue official told police there also have been several incidents of money boxes broken and cash taken over the last few weeks.
