A 42-year-old Niantic man was charged with stealing $181 worth of gum from Super Stop & Shop on Kings Highway Cutoff last Friday afternoon.

William Thomas Lee, of North Bridgebrook Road, was charged with sixth-degree larceny. He was released on a promise to appear Jan. 8 at state Superior Court in Bridgeport.

Police said Lee concealed the gum in a bag and walked past cash registers without paying for it about 5:25 p.m. Friday.

Security personnel at the supermarket stopped Lee as he left the store and detained him until police officers arrived, according to the report.
