A Trumbull man had to be cut from beneath his wrecked car after he drove under the rear of a tractor-trailer truck parked in the rest stop off Interstate 95 northbound in Fairfield early Friday, State Police said.

Assistant Fire Chief Douglas Chavenello said the driver -- who was ejected from the car -- was extricated from the wreckage and treated by paramedics on the scene at around 4:30 a.m. State Police said the driver suffered "evident" and "incapacitating" injuries.

The driver -- Michael Sarafin, 36, of Columbine Drive -- was in critical condition in the surgical intensive-care unit, said Lucinda Ames, a spokeswoman for St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, as of 12:30 p.m. Friday

The crash happened at 3:19 a.m., officials said. The accident report states that Sarafin was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, but the vehicle's airbag did deploy.

The driver of the tractor trailer was asleep in the sleeper berth of the truck's cab at the time of the crash and was not injured, state police said.

Sarafin was driving a 1996 Toyota Corolla in the off ramp of I-95 northbound heading into the Fairfield rest area when his car collided with the rear end of the tractor-trailer, which was parked at the side of the road, partially in the off ramp, state police said.

The left part of the Corolla hit the right portion of the trailer and under ride guard, becoming wedged underneath, state police said.

The truck's trailer had rear-end damage and the Corolla had heavy front-end damage and was cut apart during the extrication of the driver, state police said.

Firefighters used air bags, cribbing and hydraulic rescue to extricate the trapped driver.

This is the second time in just over a month that Fairfield firefighters have responded to an accident in a Fairfield rest stop on I-95. On March 16, a Trumbull woman driving a Toyota Corolla was injured, but survived, after driving her car underneath a tractor trailer in the southbound rest stop. That woman also had to be extricated from her car.

State police from Troop G in Bridgeport are investigating Friday's crash. Fairfield firefighters from Engine 1 and 2 responded to the accident.
