Man who hit mother, son blames sun in his eyes

BRIDGEPORT - The sun was in his eyes, a 70-year-old Massachusetts man told police when he crashed into a mother and young son Monday afternoon, killing the mother.

“He did see them but by that time it was too late,” Joseph Frazier said, according to Police Department Spokesman Michael Giannotti. “He is very distraught.”

Carmen Martinez, 41, was killed and her 9-year-old son critically injured when they were struck by Frazier’s GMC pickup truck as they cross John Street near West Avenue shortly after 4 p.m.

Giannotti said the boy, who suffered internal injuries in the crash, was in surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital. “He is in very critical condition,” the spokesman said.

Giannotti said Martinez had been walking her son home from Roosevelt School when the crash occurred.

Frazier, of Berkley, MA, stopped after the crash and has not been charged.

“The incident is still under investigation,” Giannotti said.
