Mercedes-Benz of Fairfield has opened a new showroom and lot for previously owned cars on Commerce Drive, across the street from its existing center.

The 3,000-square-foot used-car showroom at 80 Commerce Drive previously had displayed the dealership's Smartcar line of two-passenger vehicles. The Smartcar line has been relocated to the existing 15,000-square-foot showroom and lots at 165 Commerce Drive, the dealership said in a news release. That site now will house new vehicles only.

Joe Czarnecki, the dealership's general manager, said the opening of the used-car showroom and its adjacent lot completes an expansion of the dealership that began late last year.

The dealership in November purchased an acre of land next door to the 165 Commerce Drive center and paved it, allowing for additional customer parking and more new-car inventory.

That additional space allowed absorption of the Smartcar line at the main site and relocation of pre-owned inventory to the separate site across the street, he said.

"We now have one of the largest new and pre-owned car facilities in Fairfield County, spanning more than three acres, with 200 parking spaces and the opportunity to display over 200 vehicles," Czarnecki said.

The former Smartcar showroom has been renovated, including a new facade and millwork reflecting the dealership's Mercedes-Benz Autohaus design.

The dealership is owned by Penske Automotive Group Inc., a Michigan-based company that operates 342 retail automotive franchises, representing more than 40 different brands.

The dealership has scheduled a grand opening and ribbon-cutting at the used-car showroom on Saturday, July 13. Tours will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
