Met Amateur reaches semifinal-round

After two days of action, the field of almost 90 players has been trimmed to just four at the 118th Met Amateur Championship.

The semifinal-round of the MGA Met Amateur will take place Saturday at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Luke Sample of Old Oaks Country Club, who is seeded 16th, will play fifth-seeded Ryan Davis of Watchung Valley in one of Saturday’s two semifinal matches. In the other semifinal, fourth-seeded Jack Wall (Manasquan River Golf Club) will play Dawson Jones (Eagle Oaks).

Top-seeded Sam Bernstein, a Yale University graduate, representing Century Country Club, was edged by Sample, in a Round of 16 match on Friday. Sample defeated Bernstein on the first playoff hole.

Bernstein was the medalist in the tournament’s stroke play qualifier on Thursday, shooting a 65.

Jackson Fretty, a 2019 Greenwich High School graduate, who is a member of the golf team at Princeton University, lost to Dean Greyersman of Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Friday’s Round of 16. Greyersman defeated Fretty, 1-up. Fretty plays out of Greenwich Country Club.

Ben Carpenter, a 2020 Brunswick School graduate, representing Country Club of Darien, was defeated by Jones in the Round of 16, 4 and 3.

Carpenter won the MGA’s Carter Cup at Baltusrol Golf Club in 2019. Only 16 of the almost 90 players qualifed for the Met Amateur’s match play format of the tournament.
