Actress Patty Duke's book about living with manic-depressive disorder will be discussed Thursday, May 17, during a book club meeting of local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

The discussion is planned from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Fairfield Public Library, 1080 Old Post Road.

Duke collaborated with medical writer Gloria Hochman on "A Brilliant Madness: Living with Manic-Depressive Illness."

The book sheds light on an illness which also is called bipolar disorder and which the library said is "powerful, paradoxical, and destructive."

The library said copies of the book can be reserved by calling the circulation desk at 203-256-3160. Callers must say they are with the NAMI Book Club.

The discussion is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and advance registration is required.
