Near & Far Aid, a Southport-based provider of funding for agencies and programs working to alleviate poverty, recently appointed a new president at its annual meeting.

Jeanne Burris of Westport, the organization's vice president, took over as president at the Sept. 20 meeting. The two-year term was previously held by Patsy Devine of Fairfield.

The all-volunteer organization was founded just after World War II by Southport couple Jeannie Fay and her husband, Julian, a Navy pilot, as an emergency aid effort to help European widows and children affected by the war, according to the agency. Since 2000, the organization, which holds four annual fundraisers, has granted over $11 million to local communities.
