Near and Far Aid, a Fairfield-based all-volunteer fundraising and fund-granting organization, recently gave a grant of $5,000 to Kids Empowered by Your Support to expand its private violin lesson program for elementary school children in Bridgeport.
The New Canaan-based nonprofit program, founded in 2004, offers private music instruction, choral programs, summer and after-school practice programs, drumming and other group music activities to over 300 children in 11 Bridgeport public schools, according to a news release from Rob Silvan, its founder and executive director.
Its activities include after-school supervised practice sessions, field trips to the Bridgeport Symphony, workshops at the Fairfield Theater Co. and participation in the Young Musicians' Youth Festival.
It also maintains a partnership with the Horizons program at Westport's Greens Farms Academy, offers students opportunities to perform before audiences and also worked with two other non-profits to help salvage a summer camp program cancelled by budget cuts, the release states.
Since 2000, Near and Far Aid has given over $11 million to about 115 critical agencies, the release states.
