OSHA investigating construction worker's fall from beam

FAIRFIELD — A 34-year-old Waterbury man was rushed to St. Vincent’s Medical Center Monday morning, after he fell 9 feet from a beam to a concrete basement floor at a house under construction at 85 Sasapequan Road.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials were called to the scene to investigate the incident.

According to the police report, the construction worker was on a beam, and the beam fell. It was unclear, police said, if the beam had been properly secured. The victim was conscious and alert when first responders arrived but had an “altered mental status” apparently from the head trauma.

The single-family house is being built by Mac Construction, with Albert Grasso Prestige Builders, LLC, as the subcontractor, according to the police report.

The foreman told police he only knew the victim for a day or two and had met him at Home Depot and hired him to work for the day. The victim is from Ecuador, and police got in touch with the Ecuadorian Consulate in New Haven to make contact with his family.
