The Fairfield PTA Council has named former Board of Education member John Mitola and his wife Michele Mitola will receive its annual award for leadership in improving town schools.

The couple is scheduled to receive the council's 2013 Alis B. McGrath Friend of Education Award during a ceremony Monday evening, Jan. 14, at the Board of Education Center.

The award is named in honor of the late Holland Hill and Fairfield High School PTA president, who also served in many civic positions. It recognizes "commitment to excellence in education by demonstrating clear leadership and making a significant contribution to the betterment of children in the public schools," the council said in a news release.

An RTM member, John Mitola was on the Board of Education from 2005 to 2011 and was vice chairman his final year. He served on the school building committees for Burr and McKinley elementary schools, coached in the Fairfield National Little League and is a member of its board.

Michele Mitola has served on the Jennings School PTA executive board for the past six years, and has been Jennings' representative on an education-budget review panel for the past five years. She also served as vice president of after-school programs and literacy at Jennings.

In nominating the Mitolas for the award, Jennings PTA President Monica Fahrer and past-President Brenda Steele said, "A primary mission of the PTA is to `support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children.' John and Michele embody this statement perfectly."

The award ceremony is Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the 501 Kings Highway school board facility.
