FAIRFIELD — Jonas Brown, a Tomlinson Middle School seventh-grader and member of the Pequot Library’s Scrabble Club, was the winner of the 9th annual New England Scrabble Championship held Saturday at the Ridgefield Library.

Jonas, 12, who played three of five games alone because his partner had to leave the competition early, also won a trophy for high word score — 84 points — for the word "reading.”

The library’s Scrabble Club meets Wednesdays through May 25. It is for fourth- through eighth-graders with all levels of experience. The group is taught by Quinn Barry, described by the library as a protégé of coach Cornelia Guest, who has taken more than 50 teams to Scrabble national tourneys.
