The Pequot Library on Saturday launches its four-day Mid-Winter Book Sale with an array of titles, plus DVDs, music and art work.

Admission is free. Books on sale are donated, and all proceeds benefit the library.

Doors open at 9 a.m. Saturday, and the sale concludes Tuesday at noon.

Organizers said they had more books than display space in the library auditorium. So as patrons pluck books off tables, they will be replaced by different volumes, the library said.

Live music is planned on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The Pequot is billing the mid-winter sale as "the little sister" of its nationally recognized Summer Book Sale, which annually attracts crowds that range from local browsers to serious collectors.

More Information

PEQUOT BOOK SALE WHERE: Pequot Library, 720 Pequot Ave., Southport WHAT: Used books, DVDs, recorded music, art work WHEN: Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday: noon-5 p.m.; Monday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday: 9 a.m.-noon

The present sale's main focus is fiction, the library said. Volunteers have organized a broad array of fiction in all genres in both hardcover and paper back, the library said.

Also in stock are what the library called a "good selection" of children's books and videos, and vintage paper backs. A selection of prints, many of them colorful and humorous, the library said, also will be offered.

LP records have been sorted into the following categories: Jazz, rock, folk and country, Latin, and the spoken word. LPs have surged in popularity and are attracting collectors, the library said.

As the sale winds down Tuesday morning, books will be sold for $5 per bag. Because display tables are restocked as the four-day sale progresses, many patrons visit more than once.

The blues group Mark Naftalin and Friends are scheduled to perform Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Pianist Naftalin performed with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

The Pequot performances will be broadcast live on radio station WPKN-FM, 89.5, www.wpkn.org. Past broadcasts have helped draw patrons to the book sale from across southern Connecticut.

Both the mid-winter and the summer sales depend exclusively on books donated to the library throughout the course of the year, and books arrive continually from throughout the region, the Pequot said.

The sales account for about 15 percent of the library's annual operating budget, including the purchase of new books.

Volunteers nearly every day throughout the year process, sort, and price books for the two annual sales.
