FAIRFIELD — A kayak, containing a set of keys and a cell phone, drifted to shore at Jennings Beach Wednesday afternoon, alarming the beachgoers who found it.

They used the cell phone to call police, but when police got to the beach, the kayak’s owner had already retrieved the vessel. According to police, the man had taken the kayak to go fishing at the Fayerweather lighthouse in Bridgeport. He didn’t properly secure the kayak and it drifted over to the beach. The man, wearing a life jacket, swam after the kayak and was paddling back toward Bridgeport when police arrived.

Police and fire officials went out on the Fire Department’s boat to check on the man, who let them know he was fine.
