Pickens' Perspective: Time to wrap up the spring 2010 season
There hasn't been a season like the spring of 2010 in Fairfield since I've been here.
We had surprises, tournament runs, champions, crushing defeats and heart raising wins. Two teams were state champions, one team was FCIAC champions and many others had historic years. Without further ado, let's look back to the season that was the spring of 2010.
Team of the Season: Fairfield Warde girls tennis. The Mustangs were the story of the year, as they compiled a 20-4 record this year. Warde went 18-2 in its final 20 matches, with its only two losses coming to New Canaan. The Mustangs went on to stun the Connecticut high school tennis world with...
Best upset of the season: Fairfield Warde girls tennis beats Greenwich in Class L Finals. The Cardinals had won the last four Class L championships entering their final match with the Mustangs, and went into the match with only two losses to New Canaan. The Mustangs got ahead early and stayed ahead early, but Greenwich's top-two singles players won and second doubles team won to bring the match down to the final doubles match. Lauren Wroblewski and Maggie Giambalvo stole the show with an epic three-set win that gave Fairfield the title.
Coach of the Season: Amy Alvord, Fairfield Ludlowe girls lacrosse. Alvord started the season not knowing what to expect. Neither did any of us. After all, Alvord was the fourth Falcons' coach in four years and Ludlowe hadn't qualified for the state playoffs since 2007. Alvord boosted Ludlowe's team from good to stellar with an 11-5 season and a run through the Division II state championship.
Best playoff run of the season: Fairfield Ludlowe baseball, FCIACs. The Falcons played the tour of redemption perfectly in the FCIAC tournament as Ludlowe beat Wilton and Greenwich, who they had lost to earlier in the year. Ludlowe also overcame its hex with Ballpark at Harbor Yard going 3-0 there this year, including two wins in the FCIAC tournament.
Quote of the Season: "When did we ever not like playing here?" --Ludlowe Head Baseball Coach Keith O'Rourke talking about playing at Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Ludlowe had never won at Harbor Yard until this year.
Best team to go home empty- handed: Fairfield Warde softball. The Mustangs had their best season as Warde, going 18-6 and reaching the Class L state semi-finals. Warde's losses came to FCIAC champion Trumbull, Class LL champion Westhill, Class L champion Waterford and a pair of losses to Darien. And...
Game of the Season: Ludlowe vs. Warde softball, May 14. This was an easy pick. The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Ludlowe even stepped the the plate. The Falcons trailed as much as 7-1 in the game before mounting the comeback of all comebacks, scoring five runs in the fifth inning to get to within 7-6. Warde scored a run in the sixth, but Ludlowe tallied one in the sixth and two in the seventh, including the game-winner on a walk-off walk by Rachel Ehrlich.
There you have it. The spring of 2010. It's been great for me and hope that the summer is great for all of you. Thanks to all the teams I've covered, and congratulations to all of the graduating seniors. For those of you that are going to play sports in college, good luck. For those of you who aren't, have fun and be safe.
To all, have a great summer.
