With his team trailing Trevecca Nazarene, Tenn., in the first half of Saturday´s Plainview Lions Pioneer Classic, senior forward Nate Bridges got hit just above his left eye by an elbow and had to leave the game.

Bridges returned for the second half, his team down 35-32, and sparked a defensive surge that held Trevecca scoreless for nearly eight minutes as the Pioneers scored 45 points in the second half to win, 77-59.

“Nate can motivate us,” Wayland coach Todd Thurman said. “He´s always been our emotional leader and the thing about Nate is when he keeps his emotions intact and funnels them in a positive manner, these are the results.”

Bridges had a double-double with 14 points and a career-best 19 rebounds, playing with a large bandage over his eye.

“I knew it was going to be a tough game for us,” Bridges said. “We´ve been playing tough teams and tough ball but we hadn´t been finishing. So I just decided that we were going to have to get tougher than them if we were going to pull one out.”

The Pioneers (4-3) trailed early in the first, and Thurman attributed it to being too tight - wanting to beat Trevecca (7-1) and get some payback for a 97-70 road loss on Nov. 11, the Pioneers´ first defeat of the season.

“We were a little tight at the beginning because we felt like we owed them one,” Thurman said. “It affected us and we couldn´t run the offense.”

In the second half, the Pioneers dug down and used their defensive quickness to spark their offense and blow out the visitors and hand Trevecca its first loss of the year.

“Once we settled down and stayed within what we do, we were able to get away from them,” Thurman said.

WBU junior guard Kendall Webb scored a game-high 20 points, putting his career total at Wayland five points shy of the 1,000-point mark.

Also scoring in double figures for WBU was DeJuan Davis, who logged 31 minutes in just his second game since returning from a knee injury in the off-season, with 11.

The win over Trevecca also helped lessen the sting from Friday night´s 95-92 overtime loss to the No. 4 team in the NAIA, Robert Morris College.

Thurman, however, didn´t think that Friday night´s loss had any effect on how the Pioneers played vs. Trevecca.

“I don´t know if it was as much of last night´s game or it was that we were anxious about playing them,” he said. “We felt like we had the game taken from us at their place and didn´t give it our best effort, so we were anxious about playing them.”

With the victory, Wayland now has 12 days to prepare for its Sooner Athletic Conference opener on Thursday, Dec. 15, when rival Lubbock Christian comes to Plainview to face the Pioneers at 8 p.m. at Hutcherson Center.

“This is the last week of school and we got finals going into the LCU game,” Thurman said. “They are our first conference game and they´re our vials. We have to keep our minds straight about what is ahead.”

Lubbock Christian also competed in the Classic, and defeated Robert Morris Saturday.
