A fire that ignited on the porch of a Plum Street residence early Tuesday was doused before spreading to the main residence, firefighters said.

Residents were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors, according to firefighters, and reported the fire about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Heavy smoke was visible in front of the four-unit residential building when firefighters arrived on the scene, but the residents, including two small children, had left the structure safely.

The porch fire was quickly extinguished before it spread to the residence, smoke did fill part of the dwelling.

Engines 1, 2, 3 and 4, Ladder trucks 1 and 2, and Car 3 were dispatched to the scene.

The fire caused an estimated $1,000 in damage, according to firefighters, and is being investigated by the Fire Marshal's Office.

The initial finding is that the cause was accidental, according to the report.
