MONROE — A local man faces 19 counts of sexual assault charges stemming from allegations of child sexual abuse over a five-year period, according to police.

Lt. Stephen Corrone said 86-year-old Fernando Cachina was arrested Tuesday on 19 counts of sexual assault charges.

Cachina, a Monroe resident, was charged with three counts of risk of injury to a child, six counts of illegal sexual contact with a minor under the age of 13, five counts for first-degree sexual assault, two counts of third-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree sexual assault and three counts of second-degree unlawful restraint.

Corrone said police began their investigation on April 19, when the Detective Division received a report of a child sexual abuse that had taken place over the span of five years at a Hattertown Road home in Monroe. The investigation led police to obtain a warrant for Cachina.

He was held on a $175,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 24.
